The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture / Tagus Press is a multidisciplinary international studies and outreach unit dedicated to the study of the language, literatures and cultures of the Portuguese-speaking world. Working in close partnership with the Department of Portuguese and the Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese-American Archives, it is the oldest of these units devoted to Portuguese at UMass Dartmouth.

DUO BARRENECHEAThe Duo Barrenechea, formed by flutist Sergio Barrenechea and his wife, the pianist Lucia Barrenechea, has been performing extensively since 1989. The Duo has participated in an array of events such as the Iowa Flute Festival (1997) and the meeting of the Brazilian Music Education Association - ABEM (1995), the IV and the VIII International Festivals of Flutists (2000 and 2008), promoted by the Brazilian Association of Flutists - ABRAF, the 24º Panorama da Música Brasileira Atual-UFRJ (2008), and many editions of the International Music Festival - CIVEBRA (from 2002 to 2010) in Brasilia. The Duo Barrenechea aims to explore a wide repertoire for flute and piano, including the promotion of Brazilian music. They also performed the first auditions of works by Estércio Marquez Cunha, Alexandre Lunsqui, Rafael dos Santos, Fernando Morais and composers of "Preludio 21" group. The Duo has also presented chamber music recitals in collaboration with other musicians, such as members of the Quinteto Villa-Lobos and Quinteto Brasilia, and the flutists Rogerio Wolf, Itzzes Gergely and Maurício Freire. In 2009, they played a concert of Brazilian music at the Hanoi Opera House in Vietnam, with colleagues Fernando Silveira, clarinet, and Elione Medeiros, bassoon. The Duo Barrenechea has released, in 2008, their first CD "Moments in Paris", with French repertoire for flute and piano.

Lúcia Barrenechea is a native of Goiania, Brazil and currently holds a teaching position at the Instituto Villa-Lobos of the UNIRIO - Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. She has a BM in piano performance from the Universidade Federal de Goiás, where she was a student of Glacy Antunes de Oliveira, and a MM from The Boston University, where she studied with Maria-Clodes Jaguaribe. She received her DMA in Piano Performance from the University of Iowa under the instruction of Réne Lecuona. Ms. Barrenechea acted as soloist and pianist colaborator in various master classes by well-known artists, such as Joseph Kalischstein, Menahem Pressler, Florence Kirsch, Julius Baker, Carol Wincenc, and others. In 2002, she performed and presented a paper at the I International Villa-Lobos Conference in Paris. She has been featured as soloist with the Orquestra Estadual de São Paulo, under the direction of Eleazar de Carvalho, the Orquestra Filarmonica de Goiás, the Orquestra Sinfônica de Goiânia, under the direction of Parcival Módolo, and the Orquestra Sinfônica do Teatro Nacional Cláudio Santoro, under Fabio Mechetti. Ms. Barrenechea has collaborated in recitals with flutists Keith Underwood, Joshua Smith, Michel Bellavance and Felix Renggli, French violinist Bernard Zinck, and mezzo-soprano Klara Csordas. Her first solo album “Saracoteio - Brazilian Piano” has been released in 2009 by the label Ethos Brasil.

Sérgio Barrenechea was born in Brasília, Brazil, where he started his musical studies at the Escola de Música de Brasília. He received his BM from the Universidade de Brasília, where he studied with Odette Ernest Dias and his MM from The Boston Conservatory, where he was a student of William H.Grass. He received his DMA in Flute Pedagogy and Performance from the University of Iowa and the title of his dissertation is “The Flute Music of Francisco Mignone with an Analysis of the Sonata for Flute and Piano.” Mr. Barrenechea has played in masterclasses for Julius Baker, Walfrid Kujala, Carol Wincenc and Keith Underwood. He has been featured as soloist with the La Fosse Baroque Ensemble, the Orquestra Filarmônica de Goiás and the Orquestra Jovem de Brasília. Mr. Barrenechea was principal player with the Orquestra Filarmônica de Goiás and acted as extra with the Orquestra do Teatro Nacional Cláudio Santoro, the Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra and the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira. Barrenechea has been featured as flutist with the Quinteto Brasília and Quinteto Villa-Lobos. He was flute professor at the Escola de Música e Artes Cênicas of the Universidade Federal de Goiás, and currently holds a teaching position at UNIRIO´s Instituto Villa-Lobos.
