The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture / Tagus Press is a multidisciplinary international studies and outreach unit dedicated to the study of the language, literatures and cultures of the Portuguese-speaking world. Working in close partnership with the Department of Portuguese and the Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese-American Archives, it is the oldest of these units devoted to Portuguese at UMass Dartmouth.

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture and Department of Portuguese announce a lecture entitled “Favela e Roça Online: Digital Inclusion of Marginalized Urban and Rural Areas of Brazil,” by Paola Prado of Roger Williams University, will take place on Friday, December 2, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. in the Liberal Arts Building, LARTS 102. This presentation will examine the ways in which access to the Information Society has brought previously marginalized voices to participate in the national conversation, and explores the possible consequences of this emerging digital inclusion.

This lecture is part of a series entitled “Brazilian Music and Society at Crossroads”, organized by Prof. Dario Borim. The event is free and open to the public.

Paola Prado, Assistant Professor in Journalism and Digital Media in the Communication Department at Roger Williams University, specializes in digital inclusion, digital media convergence, and multimedia production. Her research focuses on the adoption of information and communication technologies for development and social change in Latin America. She is the co-creator of the Community Communicators journalism and multimedia workshop program, which trains community reporters in under-privileged rural areas in Colombia and the Dominican Republic. http://rwu.academia.edu/PaolaPrado/About
