 Film Description
In 1974/75, after the revolution that ended 48 years of dictatorship in Portugal, new conceptions about housing and workers’ rights emerged.  Particularly, one of a kind housing project—SAAL— involving world-renowned architect Siza Vieira and urban planner Nuno Portas among others, engaged the working poor to jointly plan their ideal homes.  This resulted in a unique and avant-garde urban housing initiative. This film is about the present memory of the SAAL project and the legacy of this social movement, which aimed to conquer the workers’ right to the city and to appropriate living spaces.

Films are selected and presented by Professor Frédéric Vidal, the Hélio and Amélia Pedroso Luso-American Foundation Endowed Chair in Portuguese Studies of the Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture.
