Portuguese Film Series Spring 2015

Film Description
With sarcasm and wit, this film provides a vibrant sensorial portrait of Lisbon during the 1980’s through the lens of a middle age man, João de Deus, who is undergoing an existential crisis.  Living in a rudimentary guesthouse with nothing else to hold on to, João de Deus’ life revolves around petty arguments with neighbors, café conversations, and failed amorous fantasies.  This film is one of  the most renowned productions of Cesar Monteiro, contributing to his ascension as a key figure in Portuguese cinema of the last decade.

Films are selected and presented by Professor Frédéric Vidal, the Hélio and Amélia Pedroso Luso-American Foundation Endowed Chair in Portuguese Studies of the Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture.
