The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth seeks a Librarian/Archivist to develop, organize, and provide access to the Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese-American Archives, a growing collection of materials documenting the Portuguese-American experience in New England and the United States.As part of the University Library Archives and Special Collections team, the successful candidate will participate in planning, collection development, reference, cataloguing, outreach, grant writing, fundraising, oral history projects and other activities that support the archives mission. |
The position requires knowledge of the history, culture, and literature of the Portuguese-speaking world, as well as the ability to read, write and speak Portuguese. The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is located in southeastern Massachusetts, near New Bedford and Fall River, at the heart of a region that is over 40% Portuguese or of Portuguese descent. This person will work closely with the Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture and with the local Portuguese community, providing leadership in developing the collections on both a regional and national scope. In addition the successful candidate will serve as librarian liaison to the Portuguese Department to assist in collection development, cataloguing and library instruction involving Portuguese Studies. The successful candidate will have demonstrated knowledge of cataloguing standards, preservation issues and community documentation planning and will participate in the development of digital collections and the archives' web presence. |
